Andrew David Garman, age 18 of Jefferson, passed away suddenly on Friday, April 8, 2011. Born on October 5, 1992 in Frederick, he is the son of David and Allison Garman of Jefferson.
Andy was a member of Brunswick High School's senior class and National Honor Society. He participated in Marching and Jazz Band playing mellophone and trumpet, and BHS and All-County Concert Bands playing french horn on which he was especially gifted. Theater productions drew Andy to the stage as an actor, singer, set builder, backstage manager and musician in the pit orchestra. He will be remembered for his natural portrayal of the boy next door in a leading role for The 1980s Musical. In four years of participation on the Academic Team, he helped lead Brunswick to consistent remarkable finishes with his genius for history, geography and general trivia. He planned to study history, music and secondary education at McDaniel College or Shepherd University, hoping to imitate two admired teachers, Mr. Nikirk and Mr. Glidewell. Active in St Paul Lutheran Church, Andy participated in Camp Hope house restorations, Hurricane Katrina cleanup, the puppet ministry, the SPY youth group, and St Paul Brass ensemble. He set an example of faith, willing service and joyful living.
The highpoint of Andys Boy Scouting career was celebrated on March 13th 2011when he was presented the Eagle Scout award along with his best friend Benji Smith. He joined Cub Scout Pack 1066 in 1999 and the Jefferson Ruritan Club Boy Scout Troop 1066 in 2004. He earned Scoutings God and Church religious award. Andy was an accomplished outdoorsman who enjoyed camping, cycling, hiking, backpacking and canoeing in locations all over the United States. He climbed the 2nd highest peak in the lower USA, Mt Elbert, as an 11 year old. He excelled at passing along his proficiency to those following him on the trail to Eagle. For his Eagle Scout Project, Andy led 28 people in refurbishing the Loudoun Heights Trail to Split Rock, overlooking Harpers Ferry, WV.
Surviving in addition to his parents are his brother, Daniel Garman, maternal grandparents, William and Martha Dennis of Keedysville, paternal grandmother Nora Garman of Crownsville and many aunts, uncles and cousins. He is preceded in death by his paternal grandfather Louis Garman. Andy lives on in and for others through his choice to be an organ donor. He will be missed by his girlfriend Ellen Roddy and his many little friends, for whom he was the big kid they eagerly ran to for playtime. Andy also will be missed for the contagious enthusiasm he kindled within his circles of activity and his gift for mentoring that blossomed with his proficiency as a musician, actor, scholar and Scout.
