Mrs. Neva Louise Smith Grossnickle, 96, of Frederick, passed away early Sunday, May 1, 2001, at the Northampton Manor Health Care Center. She was the wife of the late Ernest Dubel Grossnickle. Born in Frederick County on July 19, 1914, she was a daughter of the late Vernon Lester and Maude Irene Wagner Smith. Neva spent many years helping her husband on the family farm. After they stopped farming, she got her drivers license and starting working outside the home. She was a teacher's aide at Yellow Springs Elementary School, then the Frederick News Post, Frederick County Sheriff's Office and was retired from the Frederick County Government after years in the County Commissioners Office. She was a graduate of Frederick High School, enjoyed traveling with the Antique Auto Club as well as several bus trips around the country and especially enjoyed her bus trip out west. Neva was a member of the Faith United Church of Christ, also enjoyed reading, and had a great love for all animals, especially the dogs she had over the years. Surviving her are two daughters, Sally E. Grossnickle and husband Brent R. Taylor and Kathleen J. Rudy and husband Charles E., all of Frederick, one sister, Mary Elizabeth Gussio, of Georgia, and a sister-in-law, Harriet Grossnickle Gowen, of Riverdale, and several nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m., on Thursday, May 5, 2011 from the Faith United Church of Christ. The family will receive friends one hour prior to services. Rev. Katherine L. Penick, pastor of the church, and former pastor, Rev. Marilyn E. Washburn, will officiate. Interment will follow in the church cemetery.
