Robert Vernon Handley

Mr. Robert Vernon Handley, 84, of Jefferson, died Tuesday, April 13, 2010, at Frederick Memorial Hospital. He was the loving husband of Mary L. Routzahn Handley. He was born on Dec. 21, 1925, in Feagaville, and was a son of the late Charles M. and Ida Mae Ramsburg Handley. Mr. Handley proudly served his country during World War II in the United States Marines on the USS Bennington. He worked as a stationary engineer for more than 30 years at Fort Detrick and was retired from the Maryland School for the Deaf. He was a member of the St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Jefferson, the Jefferson Ruritan Club, where he was a past president, and Amvets Post 2 Frederick. He was a life member of the Independent Hose Co. Surviving in addition to his wife are three daughters, Linda L. McCanner and Melody A. Wisner and companion, John T. Sexton, all of Myersville, and Kimberly M. Norris, of Ranson, W.Va.; one sister, Dorothy E. Ewing, of Frederick; four grandchildren, April Oland Childs and husband, Denis, Erik A. Oland and wife, Christine, Margaret E. McCanner and Joshua T. McCanner; four great-grandchildren: his namesake, Robert Reminton Oland, Erika A. Oland, McKenna E. Childs and Aubury B. Childs; also surviving are many nieces and nephews. He will also be remembered by his two godchildren, Daniel C. Simons and Crystal J. McKnight, and special friends, Jim and Cindy McKnight and Bonnie Pearrell. He was preceded in death by two sisters, Margaret E. Eaves and Helen L. Solt and one brother, Charles F. Handley. The family will receive friends from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m., Friday, April 16, at Keeney and Basford Funeral Home, 106 E. Church St., Frederick. Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, April 17, in St. Paul's Lutheran Church, Jefferson. The Rev. Katrina L. Holland, pastor of the church, will officiate. Interment will be in the St. Paul's Lutheran Cemetery, Jefferson. Honorary pallbearers will be Danny, Remington, Erika and Crystal. Active bearers will be Erik Oland, Denis Childs, Barry Solt, Chuck Handley, Jim McKnight and Rick Simons.
