Francis William Hartzell, 87, of Frederick, passed away on Sunday February 13, 2011 in his cottage at the Homewood Retirement Community. Born August 11, 1923, he was the son of the late Richard Sr. and Elizabeth (Springer) Hartzell of Lock Haven, PA. He and his wife, of almost 65 years, Margaret Seeley Hartzell were married on March 29, 1946.
He was a WWII veteran, serving in the United States Navy from November 1942 through February 1946 in both the Atlantic and Pacific Theaters of Operation as an ASW Expert, and his destroyer division operated from Yokosuka, Japan.
He received his bachelor degree from Lock Haven University (formerly Lock Haven State Teachers College) and his masters degree from Pennsylvania State University.
He retired from Martin Marietta Corporation in August 1988 as the Corporate Director of Education and Training.
He was an active volunteer for the Salvation Army, Frederick, MD, the Frederick Memorial Hospital, and for the Emulsion Polymers Institute at Lehigh University, Bethlehem, PA.
Along with his wife, he is survived by: two sons Douglas Richard and wife Nancy (Laws) of South Lake TX and Dennis Jeffrey and wife Sheila (Crump), of San Francisco CA; two daughters, Debra Suzanne, wife of John Nyby, of Bethlehem, PA; Donna Louise, wife of David Fickett of Silver Spring, MD; brother, Robert Hartzell and wife Christine (Dicks) of Lake Worth, FL; sister-in law Lois (Reeder) Hartzell, widow of his deceased brother Richard Jr. Hartzell of Stony Brook, NY; eight grandchildren; one great-granddaughter; two nephews and three nieces.
A Memorial Service will be held at 11 AM, Saturday, February 19, 2011 at Keeney & Basford P.A. Funeral Home, 106 East Church Street, Frederick, Maryland 21701.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of Frederick County, PO Box 1799, Frederick, Maryland 21702 or to University of Maryland Baltimore Foundation (or UMBF), to be used by the School of Nursing (in the memo section) sent to University of Maryland School of Nursing, Development Office, room 727, 655 W.
