Mrs. Edith Virginia "Edie" Hawker, 69, of Frederick, died on Sunday, August 14, 2011, at her home. She was the loving wife of Joseph E. "Joe" Hawker. Edie was born on October 13, 1941, in Harrisonburg, Virginia, she was a daughter of the late William Albert and Violet Kidwell Rice. She graduated from Montevideo High School Class of 1960 , Shepherd College Class of 1964 and received her Master's in Education from the University of Maryland. Edie was retired after over 40 years with the Frederick County Public Schools, where she taught first and second grades, at Urbana, South Frederick, Waverly and Monocacy Elementary. Edie was a member of Sigma Sigma Sigma Beta Delta Chapter at Shepherd College, active while working with Frederick County Teachers Association and was a member of Frederick County Retired Teachers Organizations. Surviving her in addition to her husband is one daughter, Donna Joe Sturtz and husband Stephen, of Hagerstown, two sisters, Patricia A. Rice, of Harrisonburg, VA, and Elizabeth Hevener, of Roanoke, VA., many nieces and nephews and former brother-in-law, Paul Hevener. Edie will also be remembered by many friends, including special friends, Judy Main and Brenda Martz. She will also be missed by her four dogs, Max, Scooter, Sugar belle and Bear. Friends may call from 2 to 4 and 6 to 9 p.m., on Thursday, August 18, 2011, at the Keeney and Basford Funeral Home, 106 East Church Street, Frederick. Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m., on Friday, August 19, in the Etchison Memorial Chapel of the funeral home. The Rev. Dr. James S. Flora, will officiate. Interment will follow in the Resthaven Memorial Gardens, Frederick. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made in her memory to Hospice of Frederick County, P. O.
