The Rev. Charles L. Hein, 88, of Buckeystown, died on Sunday, June 6, 2010, at Buckingham's Choice Retirement Center. He was the husband for more than 50 years of the late Ruth Giese Hein, who died in 2005. Born July 19, 1921, he was the son of the late Ernest H. Hein and Irene Hamburger Hein. Father Hein was a 1938 graduate of Glen Burnie High School. He graduated from the University of Maryland with a Bachelor of Arts in 1942, and earned his Master of Divinity from the Virginia Theological Seminary in 1944. He was ordained deacon in 1944 and priest in 1945 by Bishop Noble C. Powell. From 1950 to 1954, he was rector of St. Paul's Episcopal Church in Smithfield, N.C. He then served in the same capacity from 1954 through 1960 at Grace Episcopal Church in Elkridge. From 1960 to 1989, he served as rector of St. Thomas' Episcopal Church in Towson. During his years as rector of St. Thomas', he successfully moved his congregation from Baltimore City to a beautiful new location on Providence Road in Towson. Upon his retirement, he was named Rector Emeritus of St. Thomas'. During his retirement, Father Hein served for several years as priest at the Episcopal Church of the Ascension, in Scarboro. Active in the larger community, Father Hein served for many years on the board of trustees of Church Home and Hospital in Baltimore and on the board of directors of Glen Burnie Bancorp Inc. Father Hein maintained a strong interest in real estate development and property renovation. He also enjoyed entertaining family and friends at his home in Upperco. An effective leader in his church and community, he preferred to be known and will be best remembered as a loving pastor and devoted shepherd of his people. He is survived by his son, Dr. David Hein; and by his grandson, Charles Alexander Hein; as well as by his sister, Irene H. Lipin, and her husband, Sen. Alfred J. Lipin; by his cousins, Tom Chenowith and Linda Chenowith Wilson; and by nieces and nephews, Lauri, Nancy, Jack, Mary and Ernie. He was predeceased by a son, the Rev. Stephen D. Hein. A memorial service will be held at 3 p.m. Sunday, June 20, at St. Andrew's Chapel of the Bishop Claggett Diocesan Center, 3035 Buckeystown Pike, Buckeystown.
