Rev. Ildefonso "Tony" Hernandez, Jr. of Frederick, MD, went into the loving arms of his Lord on Friday, December 2, 2011 at his home from complications due to liver cancer. Tony was born March 17, 1944 in Isabella, Puerto Rico. He was the son of the late Ildefonso Hernandez, Sr. and Norma Martinez of Newport News, VA.
Tony attended Sacred Heart Hospital of Practical Nursing, Cumberland, MD, Hagerstown Comm-unity College, Hood College, Lakeland Regional Medical Center, Lakeland, Florida. He also attended and graduated from South Eastern Bible University, Winter Haven, Florida.
Tony was an ordained minister in the Church of the Nazarene. He served as the beloved Assocate Pastor at New Beginning Church in Mt Airy, MD since 2004. He also served on the Mid-Atlantic District in many capacities as a district advisor in the Nazarene Church and as a board member. Rev. Hernandez planted Spanish churches in Dundalk, MD and Frederick, MD. Known to his church family as "Pastor Tony", he led a Sunday evening Bible study for many years. He loved to sing and frequently blessed his church family through his sermons and great love for his Lord. Along with his wife, they were co-directors of Missions.
He loved vacations with his dear wife and devoted brother and sister-in-law, Ken and Naomi "Omie" Marsh, to Williamsburg, VA and especially Lancaster, PA to the "Sight and Sound Theater". He also loved shopping and eating at his favorite restaurants.
He retired from Citizens Nursing Home in 2010. He served his country in the United States Navy.
Tony is survived by his precious wife Pauline who was the joy of his life, a daughter Lisa Hernandez, son Michael Hernandez and seven grand children, all of Frederick, MD. He is also survived by a sister, Nilda Hobbs and husband Rocky of Newport News, VA, one step daughter Kimberly DeLauter and husband David of Greencastle, PA, two step grandchildren, three step grandchildren of Green-castle, PA and several nieces and nephews.
The family will receive friends on Monday, December 5, 2011 from 2-4 and 6-8 PM at Keeney and Basford PA Funeral Home, 106 E. Church Street, Frederick. Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, December 6, 2011 at 11 AM at Frederick Church of the Nazarene, 7899 Opossumtown Pike, Frederick, his Pastor and dear friend, Dr. Paul Buchanan will officiate, with Rev. Terry Souden assisting. Interment will be in Pleasant Hill Cemetery, Yellow Spring Pike, Frederick. Flowers are welcomed or donations can be made to his beloved church to the Building Fund at New Beginning Nazarene Church, 12350 Jesse Smith Road, Mount Airy, MD 21771-5940.
