Margaret Hudson

Mrs. Margaret A. Hudson, 85, died Thursday, June 17, 2010, at Frederick Memorial Hospital. Born Dec. 5, 1924, in Walter Reed Hospital, Washington, she was the daughter of Joseph N. Arthur Sr. and Margaret Turner Arthur of South Carolina. She grew up in the suburbs of Pittsburgh and graduated from Avalon High School in 1942. She attended Bucknell University and graduated in an accelerated program with a B.A. degree in biology in 1945. She worked as a medical technologist at the Children's Hospital in Pittsburgh. She met her husband of 63 years, J. Richard Hudson, while he was attending college at Carnegie Institute of Technology in Pittsburgh. She worked for Bell Telephone Co. as a service representative and, upon moving to Maryland, worked as a medical technologist at Springfield State Hospital in Sykesville. After her children were born, she worked from time to time as a substitute teacher in Frederick County. She worked with her husband in his business ventures as a manufacturer's representative and operator of a silk- screen company. Later, she served as president of Hudson Properties Inc., managing rental properties with her husband. She had busy, talented hands and enjoyed weaving, knitting, bobbin lace, crocheting and counted cross stitch. She was a member of the Central Pennsylvania Guild of Hand Weavers and served as its co-president. She won several prizes for her creations in bobbin lace and weaving at the Hagerstown and Frederick fairs. She enjoyed making gifts for each of her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. They ranged from socks to shawls, hats to mittens, sweaters to afghans, and delighted with their warmth and unique colors. She enjoyed collecting woven artifacts and doll souvenirs showing clothing typical of different cultures. She was an avid reader and continued taking courses throughout her life ranging from economics to world history to algebra. She traveled to many countries of the world, but one of her favorite places was Maine, where she would sit on the porch and read her books or knit, admiring the coast. She will be remembered for her warm personality and quiet strength that attracted a wide-ranging cast of friends and family. She was predeceased by one brother, Dr. Joseph N. Arthur Jr. She was a member of Calvary United Methodist Church. She is greatly missed by her husband, J. Richard Hudson; her three children, Lynda Horsman and her husband, Wayne, James R. Hudson Jr. and his wife, Nancy, and Marc A. Hudson and his wife, Diane; her six grandchildren, Christopher Horsman and his fianc?e, Lindsay Nadolny, Andy Horsman, Kate Walker and her husband, John, Sarah Norman and her husband, David, James R. Hudson III and his wife, Erica, and Victoria Barnes and her husband, Thomas; and her two great-grandchildren, Nathan Walker and James R. Hudson IV. The family will receive friends from 3 to 5 and 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday, June 22, at Keeney and Basford, P.A., Funeral Home, 106 E. Church St., Frederick. A memorial service will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday, June 23, in the Etchison Memorial Chapel of the funeral home. The Rev. Harry Cole will officiate.
