Dorothy C. Kenney

Mrs. Dorothy C. Kenney, 92, passed peacefully on Saturday, October 9, 2010 at Lorien of Mt. Airy. She was preceded in death by her husband, Mervin W. Kenney, Sr., in 1995.

Born November 29, 1917 in South Carolina, she was the daughter of the late Oscar B. and Eunice E. Barker Carlton.

She was raised in a children's home in Bethesda. She was a member of the first graduating class of Bethesda Chevy Chase High School in 1936 where she met the love of her life, Mervin. Together they were blessed with three children.

During her working years, Mrs. Kenney was a clerk for Vitro Corp. and APWU Health Plan. She and her husband were active in the Izaak Walton League of America, Wildlife Achievement Chapter in Damascus.

Mrs. Kenney is survived by two daughters, Carol L. Parrish and husband, Willard of Mt. Airy, and Susan K. Matheson and husband, James, of Walkersville; her son, Mervin W. Kenney, Jr., of San Antonio, Texas; nine grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren; 6 great-great grandchildren; a half-sister, Martha Smith of Florida; and two half brothers, Jack and Berry Carlton of Louisiana.

In addition to her husband and parents, she was predeceased by a sister, Mildred Johnson and husband, Alfred of West Virginia; a brother, William Carlton of Louisiana; a grandson, Robert Mongold of Frederick; and a step great-granddaughter, Dana Parrish Wood of Falls Church, Va.

Mrs. Kenney was a loving person who enjoyed spending time with her family. She will be missed by many.

A private interment will be held at Potomac United Methodist Church Cemetery. A memorial service will be held at a later date.
