Joseph Lubozynski

December 16, 1923 — December 31, 2010

Mr. Joseph Lubozynski, 87, of Frederick, Maryland, died on Friday, December 31, 2010. He passed away peacefully in his home with his wife of 47 years by his side. Born on December 16, 1923, in Ontario, Pennsylvania, he was the son of the late Ignatz Lubozynski and Amelia (Bialek) Lubozynski.

Upon graduating from Bentleyville High School in 1942, he attended Charleroi Technical School. Later that year he enlisted in the U.S. Army Air Corps, where he completed Officer Candidate School. A Captain during World War II, he served as a pilot, flying missions to supply the troops during the "Hump" Operation in the China-Burma-India Theater. Throughout the Korean War, he served as a flight instructor in Greenville, South Carolina. His military service was recently documented in the Frederick County Living History Project.

After being honorably discharged from active duty, he earned his diploma from Western Pennsylvania Horological Institute, and for a short time operated Lubozynski's Watch and Jeweler Shop in Bentleyville, Pennsylvania. However, flying was his life-long dream, and in 1956, Mr. Lubozynski began his flying career by accepting a job with Capital Airlines based in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. In 1965, Capital Airlines merged with United Airlines, at which time he moved his family to Frederick, Maryland for the remainder of his flying career. He retired as a Captain in 1983.

Mr. Lubozynski was a self-taught, skilled craftsman. In 1954, with the help of his father, he built his first home in Bentleyville, Pennsylvania, on the land his father gave to him. Upon moving to Frederick, he played an active role as president of the Eastview Community, and in the early years, led the effort to convert an unused dairy barn into a community center, still in use today. Mr. Lubozynski found great enjoyment attending auctions and restoring and repairing antique lamps, clocks, player pianos and musical boxes. He had a great zest for life, and with his subtle sense of humor easily brought a smile to the faces of all who knew him.

Mr. Lubozynski was a member of the China-Burma-India Hump Pilots Association, the Airline Pilots Association(ALPA), the Retired United Airlines Pilots Association, the National Association of Watch and Clock Collectors, where he served as president from 2000 thru 2002, and the Automatic Musical Instruments Collector's Association.

Mr. Lubozynski is survived by his wife, Marie Dorcon Lubozynski, his four children, Joseph A. Lubozynski of Frederick, Mary Rose Blosser of Boca Raton, Florida, Lisa Lubozynski of East Aurora, New York, and Gina Schofield (Michael) of Annapolis, Maryland; six grandchildren, Todd Blosser (Lauren) and Tara Blosser, Michael Dudley(Jessica) and Brian Dudley, Kevin and Matthew Schofield, and great-grandson, Joseph Elon Blosser. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Mary Rose D'Orazio, in 1958, and five brothers and two sisters.

All funeral services and interment will be private at the request of the family. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church, 116 East 2nd Street, Frederick, Maryland 21701.
