Mr. Meredith H. Mackley, 95, died Wednesday, May 26, 2010, at Carroll Hospital Center, Westminster. He was the husband of the late Katherine Beard Mackley, who died Sept. 7, 2004. Born April 19, 1915, he was the son of the late Jacob H. Mackley and Eva Blanche Williams. Mr. Mackley was drafted in 1943 into the Army Transportation Corps, Camp PO one year, assigned to a troop ship transferring troops over and back. Some ports were Plymouth, England and India. They picked up troops and nurse WACS at the war's end and brought them home to Seattle by Christmas. There were no docking spaces, so they had to stay in the harbor for a couple of days, but they got the troops on U.S. soil by Christmas Eve. Following his military service, he returned to work at Frederick County National Bank as a banker and Wayside Radio Service Inc. He then worked for Western Maryland Trust Co., which became Maryland National Bank and then BB&T, eventually becoming a treasurer. He took early retirement in 1978 at the age of 63. Mr. Mackley supported his wife's work with Church Women United programs such as Frederick County Migrant Ministry, the Literacy Council of Frederick County, also as treasurer for some years, as well as Hospice. He was also involved with the Peace Resource Center, whose primary mission is to promote peace and social justice. A member of Evangelical Lutheran Church, Frederick, he sang in the church choir for many years. He is survived by a nephew, Eugene D. Young and his wife, Margaret, of Frederick. In addition to his wife and parents, he was preceded in death by a sister, Elizabeth Mercer. All services will be private at the convenience of the family.
