Mr. Eric "Rick" Van Garth Magaha, 60, of Middletown, died on Sunday, November 28, 2010 at Frederick Memorial Hospital, after a courageous two-year battle with cancer. He was the husband of Nancy Katherine Houk. Born in Charles Town, West Virginia on May 13, 1950, he was the son of the late M. Glenn and Helen Heflin Magaha. Rick was a graduate of Thomas Johnson High School Class of 1968 and attended the University of Maryland. He was a member of the Frederick Elks Lodge and was a past secretary of the Frederick Noon Sertoma club. He enjoyed collecting vintage goods, antique toys, and model trains. Rick was also an avid follower of local sports; in particular, the Washington Redskins and Maryland Terrapins. He was employed as the Northeast Sales Director for Orgill, Inc. where he had been employed since 1998 when Orgill acquired The Frederick Trading Company. Rick had previously served Frederick Trading for several years, beginning as a sales representative and working his way up to Regional Sales Manager. A lifelong member of the hardware industry, he got his start in the business in the 1980's working for Selinger Associates, a DC-based firm that he eventually went on to own and operate alongside his father, Glenn. Rick also held sales positions with the Routzahn's furniture company and Montgomery Ward earlier in his career. Rick is survived by his two children of his first wife, Mary Staley Waters, and their families: Daniel V. Magaha and wife Kristina, of Austin, Texas, and Stephanie M. Van Gorden and husband CPT Ian S. Van Gorden, U.S. Army, stationed in the Republic of Korea, one sister, Darlene Grimes and husband John, of Walkersville, three grandchildren, Logan Paul Magaha, Serena Michelle Magaha, and Genevieve Ada Van Gorden, and his wife Kathy's children and their families. He will be sadly missed by several aunts, uncles and cousins, as well as the many friends, co-workers, and customers he touched during his life. The family will receive friends from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m., on Thursday, December 2, 2010, at the Keeney and Basford Funeral Home, 106 East Church Street, Frederick. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m., on Friday, December 3, 2010, from the Calvary United Methodist Church, 133 West Second Street, Frederick. The Rev. Harry Cole and Rev. Kenneth R. Dunnington, pastors of the church, will officiate. Interment will be in the Mount Olivet Cemetery, Frederick.
