Mary Joan Magaha

Mrs. Mary Joan Swope Magaha, 78, of Frederick, died on Friday, July 29 at Frederick Memorial Hospital. She was the wife of the late Douglas Wilson Magaha, who died April 2, 2008. Born on May 21, 1933 in Frederick, she was a daughter of the late William Henry and Lurene Nogle Swope and the daughter-in-law of the late E. Paul Sr. and Alice Wilson Magaha.

Joan was an alumni of St. John's Literary Institute and a life long member of St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church. She had worked at the Peter Pan Inn, National Geographic Society and Frederick Office Supply for a number of years as well as in the tax office for the City of Frederick.

She is survived by two daughters, Julie Ann Mackley and husband Buzz of Thurmont, Gwynn E. (Beth) Shelley and husband Scott of Martinsburg, WV; one son Patrick Swope Magaha and Kim of Frederick; Seven Grandchildren, Eric Lee Scott, Sr., Alice Lurene Gordon, Todd Daniel Mackley, David Andrew Mackley, Amy Lynn Donahue, Christopher Patrick Magaha and Ryan Adam Magaha; eleven great grandchildren, Britny Gordon, Brean Smith, Eric Scott, Jr, Breanna Mackley, Raiden Donahue, Kylie Mackley, Torryn Magaha, Keiran Magaha, Gannon Donahue and James Douglas Mackley as well as one sister, Carol Ann Crabill and husband Harold of Hagerstown. She is also survived by many nieces and nephews.

Friends will be received on Monday, August 1 from 9-11 AM at Keeney and Basford PA Funeral Home, 106 E. Church Street, Frederick. Funeral services will immediately follow at 11:00 AM from the funeral home, Deacon John Manley officiating. Interment will be in Mount Olivet Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church, 118 East Second Street, Frederick, MD 21701 or to the American Cancer Society, 1393 Progress Way, Suite 908, Eldersburg, MD 21784.
