Joann Lucy La Beau Maurer passed away January 6, 2011 in Frederick, Maryland. Born January 1, 1936 in Wyandotte, Michigan, she was the daughter of the late Chesley and Lucy La Beau.
Joann received a Bachelor's in English from Western Michigan University in 1958, and a Master's in Library Science from Western Michigan University, and Long Island University in 1976. She was an English teacher and and served as librarian in Sparkill and Orangeburg, NY and Pequannock Township and Verona, NJ at the elementary and secondary levels.
In 2000, Joann became a resident at Buckingham's Choice, a senior living community in Adamstown, Maryland. While a resident, she established the community's library, and served as a member of the Residence Association's Board of Directors. She was also very active in many other clubs and activities there.
A seasoned world traveler, Joann traveled all over Europe and Asia to far and exotic locales such as Mongolia and Malta, returning to regale her grandchildren with stories of her travels.
She is survived by her five children, JoAnne Maurer Jelling of Leesburg, Virginia; Jennifer Sambataro of Poolesville, Maryland; Janice Church of Novi, Michigan; Jane Maurer Miralles of College Grove, Tennessee; and Joseph Maurer of Butler, New Jersey, along with nine grandchildren, and her friends at Buckingham's Choice, the senior living community she called home.
Mass will be held on January 17th at St. Joseph on Carrollton Manor, located at 5843 Manor Woods Road, Frederick, MD 21703 at 11:00 am. Afterwards, a reception honoring her life will be held at Buckingham's Choice in the main building. Buckingham's Choice is located at 3200 Baker Circle, Adamstown, MD 21710 (phone 301-644-1604 or 800-409-6111). Joann had requested that memorial donations be made to the Buckingham's Choice resident's assistance fund.
