Mr. James S. McGreevy, 84 of Frederick, died Saturday October 23, 2010 at Glade Valley Nursing and Rehab Center in Walkersville. He was the loving husband of Amanda Thompson McGreevy, his bride of nearly 40 years.
He was born in Taunton, Massachusetts and was the son of Leora Louise and James Woodward McGreevy. He graduated from Saugus High School in 1944 and began work with General Electric in the field of metallurgy in the jet propulsion lab. After leaving GE, he began working for publishing companies in the field of marketing and direct mail advertising. Mr. McGreevy graduated from the School of Education at Boston University in 1958 and had also studied at the Berkeley Divinity School at Yale University. In the field of publishing, he worked for companies such as Ginn & Co. and G.K. Hall in Boston, Carrollton Press in Roslyn, and prior to his retirement in 1994, worked for University Publications of America in Frederick and Congressional Information Service in Bethesda. Born into a very musical household, James was very active in church choirs in the Boston area as well as All Saints' Episcopal Church in Frederick where he first became a member in 1981. He was also a member of St. Mary's Chapter. James was an avid gardener and spent countless hours tending to his beautiful flower gardens.
In addition to his wife, Mr. McGreevy is survived by his two sons, Ian Fitz-Hugh McGreevy and his wife Peg of Frederick and Jonathan Westgate McGreevy and his wife Karen of Hagerstown. He is also survived by four grandchildren, Lily Amaranth Foland, Madelin Alexis Foland, Finn Joseph McGreevy, and Sullivan Thomas McGreevy, all of Hagerstown. James is also survived by his dear friend of close to sixty years, William Reardon of Arlington, Massachusetts.
The family will receive friends on Friday, October 29, 2010 at Keeney & Basford Funeral Home at 106 East Church Street in Frederick between the hours of 2-4 PM and 7-9 PM. A memorial service will take place on Saturday, October 30, 2010 at 2 PM at All Saints' Episcopal Church located at 106 West Church Street in Frederick. Rev. Thomas S. Rogers, III and Rev. Thomas W. Claggett, III will officate.
