Evangelie Nomicos

July 15, 1925 — February 8, 2011

Evangelie Diamantidis Nomicos passed into the loving arms of our Lord on February 8, 2011 at the age of 85. Her journey in life began on July 15, 1925 in Cairo, Egypt as the youngest of six of a tight-knit traditional Greek family who were all raised by the late Demetrious and Zoe Diamantidis.

Upon high school graduation, she worked in an exporting office, excelled in tailoring, mastered the French language arts, and enjoyed Greek folk dancing. She met Basil D. Nomicos where she worked and became his devoted wife in 1954. They both immigrated to America in 1959 and received their U.S. citizenship through hard work and determination. Her strength, dignity and grace in overcoming the daunting challenges of emigrating from Egypt to America to seek a better life inspired all who knew her. Evangelie is remembered as a lovely person filled with joy and happiness who loved her family, home, animals, baking holiday treats, children, and her church. She was especially fond of music, dance, and humor; a refined, cosmopolitan lady, yet a deeply compassionate, humble and sacrificing soul to those in need. She was the family caretaker who always rose to the occasion. She would often be found singing while busy in her kitchen, feeding breadcrumbs to wild songbirds and sewing. She always brought flowers to every home she visited. Her unconditional hospitality and warmth touched all who met her.

Evangelie is survived by her son, Jim (Dimitris) Nomicos and his wife, Effie and her daughter Joanna Hawley, her niece Marina and her spouse Peter Stegmenn and their two children, and nephews Takis and Leonidas Diamantidis and their families. Her husband, Basil Nomicos and her siblings Efrosini, Michael, Kostas, Theodore, and Barbara have all preceded her in death.

A brief viewing is scheduled at Saints Peter and Paul Greek Orthodox Church, 920 West 7th Street, Frederick, MD for Saturday, February 12, 2011 from11:30 AM until 12 Noon followed by a funeral service honoring her extraordinary life beginning at 12:00 Noon.
