H Kenneth &Quot;Kenny&Quot; Painter

Mr. H. Kenneth "Kenny" Painter, 87, of Gaithersburg, passed away Wednesday, May 5, 2010, at Frederick Memorial Hospital. He was the husband of Myrtle Thomas Painter (formerly of Adamstown) and had been married for 65 years. Born March 23, 1923, he was the son of Clarence E. Painter and Nellie Goliday Painter. He was a 1941 graduate of Poolesville High School. He was a veteran of World War II, serving in France and Germany as a machine gunner with the 157th infantry Regiment, 45th Division and participated in the liberation of the infamous Dachau concentration camp. He received several medals including the Bronze Star, Combat Infantry Badge and two Campaign Stars. During later years, he was very active in the Gaithersburg Elementary School PTA, serving as president and trustee. He held several administrative officer positions at the National Cancer Institute until his retirement in 1978 after 34 years of federal service. For many years, he was a member of the Nightingales and Bill Earl dance band. He was a member of Grace United Methodist Church, Gaithersburg; Elks Lodge 684 and Moose Lodge 371, Frederick; American Legion Post 171, Damascus; VFW Post 10076, Mount Airy; 45th Division Association 157th Infantry Regiment Association; NIH Alumni Association and the Damascus Travel Club. He enjoyed boating, fishing, gardening and dancing. Surviving in addition to his wife are two sons, Kenneth L. Painter and wife, Sharon, of Frederick, and Gary T. Painter and wife, Gail, of Merritt Island, Fla.; daughter, Nancy Strohmeyer of Germantown; five grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and two sisters, Nell Dayhoff and husband, Douglas, and Janet Bliss and husband, Bill. He was preceded in death by a sister, Clair Ruble; and a brother, Garland E. Painter. The family will receive friends from 3 to 5 and 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday, May 9, at Keeney and Basford, P.A., Funeral Home, 106 E. Church St., Frederick. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, May 10, in the Etchison Memorial Chapel of the funeral home. The Rev. David N. Hughes will officiate. Interment will follow at Monocacy Cemetery, Beallsville. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Frederick Memorial Hospital Development Fund, Attn: Mr. Coffey, 400 W.
