Elva Parks Runkle

Mrs. Elva Parks Runkle, 94, of Frederick, passed away Wednesday, Aug. 25, 2010, at Somerford House, Frederick. She was the wife of the late Bruce H. Runkle, who passed away Oct. 23, 1967. Born Oct. 28, 1915, she was the daughter of the late Ira J. and Mary Hall Parks. Mrs. Runkle was a lifelong member of the Church of the Brethren, active for many years with the Frederick congregation. She worked for Farm Credit, retiring in 1980 when she was 65 years old. She stayed active by volunteering for the Frederick Memorial Hospital Women's Auxiliary for more than 20 years. She enjoyed traveling throughout the United States, to Europe, and even visited the Holy Land.

Mrs. Runkle was the mother of Sally Nikirk Gartner of Frederick, Kenneth P. Runkle of Frederick and Dean E. Runkle and wife, Cynthia, of Boonsboro; the grandmother of Ronald D. Nikirk Jr., Michael K. Nikirk and Courtney Walker and husband, Jamie; the great-grandmother of Forest Coleman Nikirk, Jenna Nikirk, Megan Hicks and husband, Dereke, Seth Nikirk and Ella Walker; and the great-great-grandmother of Julius Hicks. She was predeceased by her brother, William Parks; a sister, June Parks; and another brother, Glen Parks. She is additionally survived by her sister-in-law, Gerty Parks. She will also be remembered by a special friend, Joanna Mundschenk.

Friends will be received from 1 to 2 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 28, at Keeney and Basford Funeral Home, 106 E. Church St., Frederick. Services will follow in the Etchison Memorial Chapel of the funeral home. The Rev. Dr. James S. Flora will officiate. The interment will follow at Mount Olivet Cemetery, Frederick.

In lieu of flowers, contributions maybe made to the Frederick Church of the Brethren, 201 Fairview Ave., Frederick, MD 21701.
