Erwin Saunders

Mr. Erwin Saunders, 87, of Frederick, died Tuesday, July 6, 2010, at his residence at Country Meadows. He was the husband of the late Joan Marie Galloway Saunders. Born June 16, 1923, in upstate New York, he was the only child of the late Arthur S. and Jennie Saunders, who emigrated from Vienna, Austria, in 1917. Mr. Saunders served a tour of duty in the Army in the Pacific theater on Guam in 1944 during World War II. After the war, he attended Antioch College in Yellow Springs, Ohio, where he graduated with a degree in business administration in 1952. He worked for Alcoa Aluminum and Westinghouse in Pittsburgh, where he met and married Joan Galloway in 1954. They raised three wonderful children, Brian, Stacy and Michael. He then moved to Bay Village, a suburb of Cleveland, Ohio, in 1963, where he worked as a divisional advertising manager for HK Porter Co. as well as a divisional advertising manager for Reliance Electric. He spent the last 15 years of his career self-employed selling industrial advertising space until his retirement in 1991 at the age of 68. He lived in the community of Bay Village, Ohio, until 2003, at which time he moved to Frederick. Beginning in the late 1980s, he and his wife traveled through Europe. After Joan's death in 1995, he continued to travel to places in Europe; St. Petersburg, Russia; the Copper Canyon in Mexico; the Grand Canyon and Morocco. He especially enjoyed Italy and was a true Italophile. He spent his free time painting, constructing scale model cars (later collecting them in limited edition form), reading and listening to jazz and classical music. He is survived by three children, Brian, Stacy and Michael; daughter-in-law, Holly; and four grandchildren, Eva, Olivia, Owen and Ella. Graveside services will be held later in St. Vincent's Cemetery, Latrobe, Pa., where he will be laid to rest next to his wife, Joan.
