Mr. George W. Schmersahl, 90, of Frederick, died on Wednesday, November 3, 2010 at Sunrise Assisted Living. He was the husband of Carolyn Gunn Schmersahl. Born in Nutley, NJ on February 29, 1920, he was the son of the late Francis Schmersahl and Millie DeVausney Schmersahl. Mr. Schmersahl was a microbiologist at Fort Detrick from 1950 until his retirement in 1972. He received his B.S. Degree from Rutgers University and his Masters Degree at The University of Maryland. Mr. Schmersahl enjoyed gardening, classical guitar and singing in various groups such as the Catoctones and the Calvary United Methodist Church Choir as well as delivering Meals on Wheels. In addition to his wife, he is survived by his children Barbra Colandreo and her husband Anthony, James Schmersahl and his wife Carmen, Frank Schmersahl and his wife Carolyn and William Schmersahl and his wife MariBeth, grandchildren Stephen Delaughter and wife Kathy of Hagerstown, Christine Cohen and husband Steven of Chandler, AZ, Liane Schmersahl of Warsaw, IN and Stephanie Schmersahl of Salisbury. He is also survived by 7 great-grandchildren and his sister Marjorie Staph of Montville, NJ as well as his family at Sunrise Assisted Living and his church family at Calvary UMC. The family will receive friends on Sunday, November 7 from 2-5 PM at Keeney and Basford Funeral Home, 106 East Church Street, Frederick. Funeral services will be held Monday, November 8 at 11:00 AM at Calvary United Methodist Church, 131 West Second Street, Frederick, Rev. Kenneth Dunnington officiating. Interment will be in Mount Olivet Cemetery, Frederick. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Frederick Food Bank, 100 South Market Street, Frederick, Maryland 21701.
