Alvin Simon

Mr. Alvin Simon, 90, of Hagerstown, passed away Wednesday, July 21, 2010, in Hagerstown. He was the husband of Judith (Reese) Simon. Born Nov. 13, 1919, in Baltimore, he was the son of the late Jacob Nathan and Anna (Stein) Simon. He was a longtime member of the Beth Sholom Congregation, Frederick; and was a member and 32 degree mason of the Columbia Lodge 58, A.F. & A.M.; the Scottish Rite Bodies; Tall Cedars of Lebanon 132; and Jacques DeMolay; as well as the FSK Post 11, American Legion, Frederick. Mr. Simon graduated from Frederick High School, class of 1937; from Strayer Business College; and the University of Maryland, School of Pharmacy, in 1951. He served in the U.S. Army in the Pacific Theater of Operations, including Guadalcanal, during World War II. He worked as a pharmacist in the Frederick area for many years, including People's Drug Stores and Medical Arts Pharmacy. He is survived by his wife of 40 years and two daughters, Nancy Beth Simon Middleton of Walkersville and Rebecca Gail Simon Klipp and husband, Eugene, of Woodsboro; one son, David Hanson Simon, of Martinsburg, W.Va.; one sister, Rita Simon Gordon and husband, Paul, of Frederick; seven grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and a number of nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by a son-in-law, David Middleton; and one brother, Leonard Simon. There will be no visitation or viewing. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, July 22, at Keeney and Basford, P.A., Funeral Home, 106 E. Church St., Frederick. Interment will be in Resthaven Memorial Gardens, Frederick. The family will be observing Shiva at 8 p.m. Thursday, July 22, at his sister's home. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Beth Sholom Congregation, 1011 N. Market St., Frederick, MD 21701, to Hospice of Washington County, 747 Northern Ave., Hagerstown, MD 21740 or to the charity of one's choice.
