Gerald H. Smith

Col. Gerald Humphrey Smith (Brazilian Air Force Ret.) 88, of Frederick, died on Tuesday, December 6, 2011, at his home. He was the husband of the late Joanna Adlington Urner Smith, who died on September 27, 2011. Born on May 30, 1923 in Sao Paulo, Brazil, he was a son of the late Frederick William Smith and Rhoda Gardner Smith Urner. Mr. Smith spent most of his life in the banking business, having worked as a teller at F & M Bank and as a vice-president of the Thurmont Bank. After his banking career he worked as a real estate agent for Century 21 and Bach and Associates. He was a member of the All Saints Episcopal Church, Amvets, VFW and was a life member of the Frederick Elks Lodge. From 1971 until 1975 he served as a district Commissioner for the Boy Scouts of America. Surviving him are three children, Jody Smith Ward and husband Kevin, of Clifton, VA, James H. Smith and his fiancee, Kate Welter, of Ijamsville and Robert H. Smith, of Wolfsville, two brothers, Frederick R. "Peter" Smith, of Sao Paulo, Brazil and Roger F. Smith, of Yorktown, VA, five grandchildren, Christopher R. Ward and wife Jennifer, of Leesburg, VA, Shannon O'Neill Ward Sundra and husband Todd, of Ashburn, VA, Caitlin E. Adlington Ward, of Clifton, VA, Alexis Hammond Smith, of Wilmington, NC and Zachary M. Smith, of Ijamsville, four great grandchildren, Zoe Ward, Brooklyn Sundra, Elena Ward and Madelyn Sundra, also surviving are many nieces and nephews, including niece, Katharine Urner Jones, of Framingham, MA. He will also be remembered by Nesha and Greg Stone, two very special people in his life, many wonderful neighbors and friends who provided great care and love for him along with Hospice, Holly Brubaker of Hospice and Dr. Eskander. The family says many thanks to all. Mr. Smith was preceded in death by his step father, Jonas Urner and brother, Rear Admiral Jayme Urner, (Ret.) The family will receive friends from 4 to 7 p.m., on Friday, December 9, 2011, at the Keeney and Basford Funeral Home, 106 East Church Street, Frederick. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m., on Saturday, December 10, 2011, from the All Saints Episcopal Church, 106 West Church Street, Frederick. The Rev. Thomas A. Momberg, rector of the church, will officiate. Interment will be in the Mount Olivet Cemetery, Frederick. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of Frederick County, P. O.
