Allen Richard Smith, Sr.

June 5, 1954 — April 28, 2011

Mr. Allen Richard Smith, Sr., 56, of Smithsburg, died Thursday, April 28, 2011 at Waynesboro Hospital. He was the husband of 37 years to Sharon Smith.

Born June 5, 1954 in Frederick, he was the son of Melvin and Shirley Hiltner Smith, of Hagerstown.

Allen was employed by Poole and Sons Excavating of Middletown for several years. He and his wife lived in Frederick County before moving to Smithsburg 21 years ago.

He was an avid race fan and owned his own race cars. He raced at Pathvalley Speed Park in Dry Run, Pa. This was a family hobby that he greatly enjoyed with his children.

In addition to his wife and parents, he is survived by his best friend and son, Allen Smith, Jr.; his daughter, Becky Smith and her devoted friend, Chas Clouser, and his son, Damian; his beloved grandchildren, Brody and Holly Smith; three sisters, Sandy Flook and her husband, Allen; Janet Smith; and Cathy Smith; and two brothers, Gary Smith and wife, Dawn; and Mark Smith.

Allen also is survived by a number of nieces, nephews, aunts and uncles. He will be remembered by his extended racing family. He will be sadly missed.

He was predeceased by a granddaughter, Hailey Morgan Smith.

The family will receive friends from 2 to 9 p.m. on Sunday, May 1, 2011 at Keeney & Basford Funeral Home, 106 E. Church Street, Frederick.

Funeral services for Allen will begin at 2 p.m. on Tuesday, May 3 at the funeral home chapel. Officiating will be the Rev. Dr. James S. Flora.

Interment will follow in Mt. Olivet Cemetery. Serving as bearers will be Allen Smith, Jr., Chas Clouser, Gary Smith, Mark Smith, John Winsett, Cody Kershner, Kip Martin, and Ben Bidle.
