John R. Spencer was added to God's flock of angels Tuesday, June 8, 2010, after his valiant fight with lung cancer. He was born April 5, 1940, to the late John H. Spencer and Mary Anastasia (Obey) Spencer and was the stepson of the late John Blinn John retired from Lockheed Martin in 2000, returning to the work force for G.D.E. until 2005. He served in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War in Company B, 27th Ordinace Battalion, from 1959 until his honorable discharge in December 1964. In addition to his wife of 20 years, Julia, he is survived by his children, John R. and wife, Jennifer, and John O. and wife, Anastasia Marie. He is also survived by his stepson, Doug Wallick Jr. and wife, Cheryl; numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren with local grandchildren, Gary, Cheyann and Emma Wallick. John was also godfather to his grandson, Gary. Additionally, he is survived by brothers, Robert and wife, Carole, and Roland and wife, Joan; sisters, Margaret Wall and Susan Churchwell; sister-in-law, Linda Watts and husband, Dallas; brothers-in-law, Alden Barnard and wife, Nancy, and Richard Barnard Jr. and wife, Connie; along with numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his son, Scott. The family will receive friends from 3 to 5 and 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday, June 10, at Keeney and Basford, P.A., Funeral Home, 106 E. Church St., Frederick. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, June 11, from Locust Grove Church of the Brethren, 13356 Glissan's Mill Road, Mount Airy. Pastor Debra Linton, of Araby United Methodist Church, will officiate. Interment with military honors will follow in the church cemetery.
