Mrs. Phyllis Hemp Summers, 83, of Frederick, died on Saturday July 2, 2011, at Homewood at Crumland Farms.
Born August 13, 1927 in Jefferson, Maryland, she was the daughter of the late Robert Douglas and Helen Beall Hemp. She was preceded in death by her husband of 54 years, J. Vernon Summers, Esq., her brother Robert Hemp and her brother William Hemp.
Mrs. Summers lived life to its fullest. She was an avid golfer who played most of the courses in Frederick County, including Holly Hills Country Club, the VFW Country Club, and Glade Valley Golf Club. She participated in many fundraising tournaments, both as a player and organizer. She was particularly proud of achieving several holes-in-one on the 3rd and 8th holes at the VFW Country Club. Mrs. Summers gave countless hours as a community volunteer. She served on the Board of Directors for the Jeanne Bussard Center, was a member of the Women's Auxiliary at the VFW County Club, a member of the Frederick Memorial Hospital Auxiliary, and volunteered with the Salvation Army in Frederick. In addition, she was a member of the American Legion Francis Scott Key Post 11, The Frederick Elks Lodge #684, and Evangelical Lutheran Church in Frederick. In her later years as a resident at Homewood at Crumland Farms, she helped organize the annual golf tournament, served as a volunteer receptionist for the Willows at Homewood, organized and sold tickets for the annual quilt raffle, and helped with the annual Homewood yard sale. She was always out and about on her scooter, talking with friends and greeting visitors.
Mrs. Summers is survived by four children: Lee S. Schipper of Boonsboro; Jon. V. Summers and wife Nancy of Thurmont; Robert C. Summers and wife Joyce of Frederick; Ann S. Jaeschke and husband Wayne of Westchester, PA. She is also survived by six grandchildren: Dr. Thomas Luke Simmons and fiance Dr. Tina Binz, S. Kees Schipper and friend Ashley Spahn, Dr. Jan Schipper and wife Dr. Beth Pollodoro, and Taylor, CJ and Morgan Jaeschke. In addition, Mrs. Summers is survived by many friends in Frederick and at Homewood.
The family will receive friends at Homewood at Crumland Farms, 7407 Willow Road, Frederick, from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. on Thursday, July 7, followed by a memorial service at 11 a.m. with the Rev. Suzanne Morris and Dr. Mike O'Donnell officiating.
