Robert Thomas "Tom" Thayer Jr., 65, of Orlando, Fla., passed away Monday, May 3, 2010. Born in Leesburg, Va., on April 28, 1945, he was the son of the late Robert Thomas Thayer Sr. and Mary Elizabeth Frye Thayer. Tom grew up in the Furnace Mountain, Va., area and was educated in Loudoun County schools. He was a member of the Furnace Mountain Presbyterian Church. A sports enthusiast his entire life, Tom played baseball for Taylorstown at age 16 and also played for the Todd Steel baseball team from 1961 through 1964. He was also an avid Washington Redskins fan. Tom worked a number of years at the Todd Steel plant before joining the U.S. Army in 1970, where he was ultimately stationed in Germany. In 1974, Tom moved to Orlando, Fla., managing his own security business for 10 years. At the time of his death he owned and operated a transportation services enterprise. He is survived by three children, Robert Thayer of Brunswick, Lindsay Thayer of Gaithersburg, and Kyle Thayer of Frederick; and one grandchild, Justin Thayer. He is also survived by sisters, Imogene Martin of Frederick, and Lisa James of LaPlata; and a brother, James French of Bel Air. A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, May 29, at Keeney and Basford Funeral Home, 106 E. Church St., Frederick. Interment will be private.
