Marian Tisdale

July 8, 1913 — May 9, 2011

Mrs. Marian Tisdale died the 9th day of May, 2011. She was the widow of the late Major William Graham Tisdale, whom she married in 1941.

Born in Fulton, Missouri on July 8, 1913, she was the daughter of the late John Hampton and Elvira Newby Atkinson. Mrs. Tisdale graduated from Ames High School in Ames, Iowa. She earned a Bachelor of Music and a Bachelor of Arts in French degrees from Drake University, Des Moines, Iowa, and a Master of Arts degree in French from University of North Carolina, Charlotte, N. C. She undertook further graduate studies at the University of Grenoble in Grenoble, France. She taught undergraduate French, retiring in 1979 from Mars Hill College, Mars Hill, N. C. Earlier, when she was on the faculty at Coker College in Hartsville, South Carolina, her future daughter-in-law, Donna, was one of her students before she met Marian's son.

Her fondest love, after her family, was playing the piano and enjoying classical music. She was a soft-spoken lady who held dear her many friends. She will be missed by her friends at Buckingham's Choice Retirement Center, Adamstown, Maryland, where she had lived the past eleven years.

Mrs. Tisdale is survived by her son, John Hampton Tisdale and his wife, Donna, of Frederick, Maryland; grandsons, Ian Douglas Tisdale, of Alexandria, Virginia, and James MacGregor Tisdale, of Baltimore, Maryland; great-grandchildren, Sean Hampton Tisdale and Charlotte Eleanor Tisdale, of Baltimore; and her nephew, R. James Haven, of Allegan, Michigan. She was predeceased by a grandson, John Hampton Tisdale II.

A memorial Eucharist will be held at Buckingham's Choice, 3200 Baker Circle, Adamstown, Maryland, at 4:00 p.m. on May 25, 2011, with the Rev. Elaine Prince as celebrant.

The family suggests that in lieu of flowers memorials may be made to the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation, Maryland Chapter, 10155 York Rd., Cockeysville, MD 21030.

Arrangements are by Keeney & Basford Funeral Home, Frederick, Maryland.
