Florence "Flo" Alice Wowak Vandermause, 90, passed away on the night of September 30, 2011, at Frederick Memorial Hospital following a heart attack. A long-time resident of Takoma Park, Maryland, where she raised four children, Flo moved to Frederick with her husband in 1995. Born in Shenandoah, Pennsylvania, Flo came to Washington, D.C. after her high school graduation to become one of the famed government girls known affectionately as "G-girls" who assisted the U.S. war mobilization effort in civilian support jobs. There she met her future husband of 66 years, Orville Joseph Vandermause, who passed away earlier this year. If ever a woman was meant to be a mother, it was Flo. She reveled in her role and her natural affinity for mothering carried over to her later roles as grandmother and great grandmother. She laughed easily, and loved as much as anything sitting around the kitchen table after a good meal (prepared by her from scratch, of course), munching dessert, chatting, joking, sharing stories and chuckles, just being together. She will live on in many memories, survived by son Daniel Vandermause (Betty) of Ellicott City; daughters Karen Pincus (David) of Fayetteville, AR, Elaine Kessinger (John) of Richmond, VA and Marcia Vandermause (Bill Bruchey) of Rogersville, TN; and her beloved grandchildren and great grandchildren. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the American Heart Association.
