Orville Joseph Vandermause

July 8, 1921 — February 28, 2011

Orville Joseph "Van" Vandermause, 89, of Frederick, MD died on February 28. He was born July 8, 1921 to Ida and August Vandermause and was the only one of seven siblings to make his home outside Wisconsin.

As a World War II Army clerk, he served on General Omar Bradleys headquarters staff in London, where he typed a portion of the Allied Forces D-Day invasion document and accompanied Bradley to the Normandy beaches soon after. At age 50, he sold the Pfaff sewing machine business he had built over 20 years into a franchise within the Lansburghs department stores throughout the D.C. area and launched a new career as a life insurance and pension specialist with Berkshire Insurance. After retirement, he volunteered for many years at Frederick Memorial Hospital. An easy-going, intelligent and personable man with a great sense of humor, he was liked by all who knew him.

Though he relished all his roles, none came close to the joy he received from his role as family man to his wife of 66 years Florence Wowak Vandermause , four children (Karen, Fayetteville, AR; Dan, Ellicott City MD; Elaine, Chesterfield, VA; and Marcia, Rogersville, TN, and formerly of Walkersville, MD), grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be announced at a later date. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Frederick Memorial Hospital Auxiliary, 400 W. 7th Street, Frederick, Maryland 21701.
