Elsie S. Winebrener, 102, passed away Thursday, Aug. 5, 2010, in Frederick. She was the wife of the late Byron Winebrener, who passed away in 1957. Born June 26, 1908, in Washington, she was the daughter of the late Leo H. and Caroline (Steiner) Sommerfield. She graduated from Towson College in 1927. She pursued further studies at Hood College and Columbia University. She taught school in New Jersey for five years before moving to Frederick. She continued teaching school and later worked for Richard F. Kline as an accountant until her marriage. She loved to travel and spent all of her vacations traveling in the United States and abroad. She was a founder of the Frederick Travel Club, as well as a member of Grace United Church of Christ, Frederick. She is survived by two nieces, Jean Martz (wife of the late Walter A. Martz) and Peggy Kinsey (wife of the late Gwynn X. Kinsey); 12 great-nieces and great-nephews; 19 great-great-nieces and great-great-nephews; and three great-great-great-nieces and great-great-great-nephews. She was preceded in death by three sisters, Catherine Sommerfield, Julia Winebrener and Caroline Rigler; and one niece, Betty Casanova. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Aug. 10, at the Keeney and Basford, P.A., Funeral Home, 106 E. Church St., Frederick. The Rev. Dr. Joseph R. Foster of Grace United Church of Christ will officiate. The interment will follow at Mount Olivet Cemetery, Frederick. Condolences may be shared with the family by going to KeeneyBasford.com
