Mrs. Alice Elizabeth Jackson Mercer, 86, of Frederick, died on Monday, February 27, 2012, at her home. She was the wife of 46 years to the late Carl William Mercer, who died May 17, 1993. Born in Thurmont on September 1, 1925, she was a daughter of the late Morris Merhl and Ella Jane Hahn Jackson. Alice was a graduate of Thurmont High School Class of 1942 and a graduate of the Nursing School of the Frederick City Hospital, Class of 1945. She retired from nursing in 1962. She then worked at the Calvary United Methodist Church as the financial secretary and membership secretary from 1983 until 2005. She was a long time member of the Calvary United Methodist Church and the Wide Awake Sunday School Class. For a period of five years she was a volunteer for the Red Cross Blood Mobile. Alice was a very kind and giving person. Surviving are her children, Cheryl "Chris" Mercer Irving and husband Andrew, of Frederick, and Barry S. Mercer and wife Leasa, of Jefferson, one sister, Barbara Diffenbaucher, of Greencastle, PA, brother-in-law, Austin Gaver, of Mt. Airy, three grandchildren, Katelyn Irving, Amelia Irving and Katie Renner. She will also be remembered by several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by a sister, Morris Ella McKisssick. The family will receive friends from 3 to 5 and 7 to 9 p.m., on Thursday, March 1, 2012, at the Keeney and Basford Funeral Home, 106 East Church Street, Frederick. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m., on Friday, March 2, 2012, from the Calvary United Methodist Church. The Rev. Kenneth R. Dunnington, Rev. Harry C. Cole and Rev Robert E. Manthey, will officiate. Interment will follow in Resthhaven Memorial Gardens, Frederick.
