Mrs. R. Suzanne Shipley Schmid, 81, of Frederick, went to meet her Heavenly Father on Monday, February 27, 2012 at the University of Maryland Medical Center. She was the wife of Walter Schmid, Jr. They were married on October 3, 1952. Born October 25, 1930 at her family's home on College Avenue, she was the daughter of the late Ruth Johanna and G. Raymond Shipley. Suzanne graduated from Frederick Memorial School of Nursing and attended the University of Maryland where she met and married Walter Schmid, Jr. After living in Philadelphia, Pa. and Baltimore, she returned to her hometown of Frederick. Suzanne worked as a Registered Nurse for Frederick Memorial Hospital, Frederick County Public Schools and Frederick County Health Department. After retirement, she volunteered for the American Red Cross and at Fort Detrick providing her nursing skills. She loved cooking, traveling, gardening, the arts, and was a devoted member of the Evangelical Reformed United Church of Christ in downtown Frederick. When her children were younger, she directed the kiddie college summer program through the YMCA. Suzanne was an avid daily swimmer at the Hood College pool and more recently at the Y. Suzanne enjoyed life to the fullest and loved to help others during their time of need. She will be lovingly remembered by many and was affectionately known as "Grannie Sue". In addition to her husband, she is survived by her two children, Denman Hans Schmid and wife, JoyceAnn; and Alyce Katrina Schmid; and her granddaughter, Sienna Suzanne "CC". She also will be greatly missed by her beloved pets, Buster and Lee Lee. She was predeceased by two sisters, Dorothy M. Winpigler and E. Elizabeth Sponseller. Suzanne's family will receive friends from 11 a.m. until a service celebrating her life begins at 12 p.m. on Friday, March 2, 2012 at Evangelical Reformed UCC, 15 W. Church Street, Frederick. Officiating will be the Rev. Barbara Kershner Daniel. There will be a time of fellowship following the service. A brief graveside inurnment service for Suzanne will begin at 10 a.m. on Monday, March 5 at Mt. Olivet Cemetery. Those wishing to attend should assemble by 9:50 a.m. near the FSK Chapel of the cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to an animal rescue charity of one's choice, or to Evangelical Reformed UCC, 15 W. Church Street, Frederick, MD 21701.
