John Owen Thompson Sr.

July 30, 1921 — March 5, 2012

Mr. John Owen Thompson Sr., 90, of Frederick, Maryland died on Monday, March 5, 2012 at his home. He was the husband of the late Ruth Louise (Hoffman) Thompson who died in 1997. Born July 20, 1921 in Lansdowne, MD, he was the son of the late Leroy and Irene E. (Lugenbeel) Thompson. He joined the United States Navy in 1942 serving as a Machinist Mate First Class onboard the Motor Torpedo Boat Squadron 3 near the Solomon Islands. He was the assigned in 1943 to the Motor Torpedo Boat 61. After PT-109 was sunk, Lt. Leonard Thom became skipper on MTB 61. For his time in the service, Owen was awarded the World War Two Victory Medal, the American Area Campaign Medal, the Asiatic Pacific Campaign Medal and the Good Conduct Medal. He was a longtime member of the Memorial United Methodist Church in Poolesville, Maryland. Owen was also known for being a man that was good working with his hands, and enjoying the outdoors hiking and biking. Owen is survived by two sons John O. Thompson Jr. and William S. Thompson; one sister Vivian Stewart; two grandchildren Samuel S. Thompson and Michael B. Thompson and four great grandchildren Jocelyn Thompson, Marissa Thompson, Kierra Thompson, and James Thompson. In addition to his wife and parents, Owen was preceded in death by four brothers Theodore Thompson, Roger Thompson, Celius Thompson, and David Thompson. The family will receive friends on Thursday, March 8, 2012 from 3 to 5 and 7 to 9 PM at the Keeney & Basford Funeral Home. The funeral service will be held on Friday, March 9, 2012 at 11:00 AM in the Etchison Memorial Chapel, 106 E. Church St, Frederick. Pastor Patricia Dols will officiate. Interment will follow at the Prospect Cemetery, Mount Airy. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to the Memorial United Methodist Church, 17821 Elgin Rd, Poolesville MD 20837 or The American Diabetes Association, 800 Wyman Park Dr., 1st floor, Baltimore MD 21211.
