Carolyn Gunn Schmersahl

July 10, 1923 — April 25, 2012

Carolyn Lewis Gunn Schmersahl, 88, of Frederick, MD, died on Wednesday, April 25, 2012, at College View Nursing Center of Frederick. She was surrounded by family and friends. She had been a resident of Sunrise Assisted Living in Frederick from 2007 until April of this year when she moved to College View Center where she had worked as a nurse for many years. Born July 10, 1923, in Romney, West Virginia, Carolyn was the daughter of the late Moton Clarence Gunn and Brady Belle Moreland Gunn Stone. She was the wife of George W. Schmersahl who passed away on November 3, 2010. Mrs. Schmersahl is survived by four children: Barbra A. Colandreo and her husband Anthony of Old Braddock near Frederick, James A. Schmersahl and his wife Carmen, of Frederick, Frank E. Schmersahl and wife Carolyn, and William L. Schmersahl and wife MariBeth of Myersville; four grandchildren: Stephen W. Delaughter and wife Kathy of Hagerstown, Christine Cohen and husband Steve of Chandler, AZ, Liane Schmersahl and Stephanie Schmersahl of Myersville; and seven great grandchildren: Shelbi, Nicole, Cassandra, and Alexis Delaughter, Kaitlin, Aaron, and Madeline Cohen. Mrs. Schmersahl grew up in Romney West Virginia, graduated from Romney High School, class of 1941, and Potomac State University in Keyser, WV. She worked as a Laboratory Technician at Newton D. Baker Army Medical Facility in Martinsburg, WV, where she met George Schmersahl. They were married in 1946 in Martinsburg, WV and lived in Baltimore, MD, while George completed his Masters degree in Microbiology and then moved to Frederick in 1950. In 1975, Carolyn graduated from The Frederick Memorial Hospital School of Nursing, and cared for others as a nurse at College View Center in Frederick from 1976 until 2004 when she retired. She was a member of Calvary United Methodist Church in Frederick for over 60 years where she taught Sunday School, played in the Bell Choir, sang in the Chancel Choir, and served on the Altar Guild. She will be fondly remembered by the Friendly Circle Sunday School Class and Miriam Circle. Carolyn was engaged in the many activities of her children and grandchildren and will be remembered by many; especially former members of Boy Scout Troop 799, Frederick and TJ High School's bands and by students and teachers at South Frederick Elementary where she volunteered. She was loving and giving and will be fondly remembered by her extended family members, Marjorie Stapf , Sondra Moreland and Jane Stone and their children and by many old and new friends especially by her dear friend Jean Durant, at Sunrise of Frederick. Carolyn's family would also like to acknowledge the love and kindness of her care givers both at Sunrise and College View. Friends may visit with the family on Tuesday, May 1st, from 3:00 - 6:00 pm at Keeney & Basford Funeral Home at 106 East Church Street in Frederick. The funeral service will be held on Wednesday, May 2nd at 11:00 am at Calvary United Methodist Church, 131 West 2nd Street, Frederick. Rev. Kenneth R. Dunnington and Rev. Harry C. Cole will officiate. Interment will follow at Mt. Olivet Cemetery. In lieu of flowers contributions can be made in Carolyn's name to the Community Foundation of Frederick County 312 East Church St Fredrick MD 21701 for the benefit of Lincoln Elementary School (formerly South Frederick Elementary).
