Jo Mccorkle

September 19, 1920 — May 1, 2012

Verna Jo Griffin McCorkle, or Jo to everyone who knew her age 91 of Frederick, passed away on Tuesday, May 1, 2012. The youngest of 13 children born to N. L. and Molly Jane Griffin in Pontotoc, Mississippi. Jo took to music at a young age. She had a gift of being able to listen to a tune once and sit at a piano and start to play. She attended Athens College in Tennessee where she was very popular at campus events. She met her future husband Jack McCorkle during her Sophomore year and they married a year later. Jo was a true southern lady, a steel magnolia, who took great pride in the children she raised, her grand children and great grand children. In her later years she took joy in going to Charlestown, WV with her daughters and son- in- law to play the slots! Coming from a large family, she also enjoyed the love of many aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews. Jo moved from Pontotoc to Frederick, MD in 1994 to be closer to her children who lived in the area. She is survived by her 3 children Pegge Fisher and her husband Clarence; Jodie Bachman and her husband Fred; and Jack McCorkle, Jr. and his wife Debra; four grand children (Clarence Jr., Scott, Matthew, and Peter Griffin) and 4 great grandchildren (Ryan, Conner, Calvin Griffin, and Carly). Jo led a full life and will be missed by everyone who came to know her. Friends will be received on Thursday, May, 3, 2012 from 10 to 11 AM at the Keeney & Basford Funeral Home, 106 E. Church St., Frederick were a funeral service is scheduled to begin at 11 AM. The entombment will follow at the Mount Olivet Cemetery Mausoleum, Frederick.
