Mr. Charles Vernon Smith, 83, of Middletown, died on June 1, 2012 at Frederick Memorial Hospital. He was the husband of Lucy Smith. Born on July 16, 1928 in Lander, he was the son of the late Guy Vernon Smith and Mary Catherine Zimmerman. Mr. Smith was a self-employed farmer, belonging to the Maryland-Virginia Milk Producer's Association. Later in life was a school bus driver and a salesperson for Furst-McNess in addition to delivering flowers for a number of years. He was a member of Harmony Community Lutheran Church and was a 2 time president for the Middletown Lion's Club. He was an avid bowler and loved to tell stories and generally talk with people. Mr. Smith attended nearly 80 consecutive Great Frederick Fairs until last year. In addition to his wife, Mr. Smith is survived by his children B. David Smith, Mark A. "Tony" Smith, Martin Luther Smith and wife Teresa and Kay L. Smith and Donnie. He also is survived by 8 grandchildren April, Coy, Elaine, Ashley, Shelby, Haley, Chris and Megan as well as 4 great-grandchildren and a number of nieces, nephews and cousins including his very close cousin, Pat Smith. He also leaves behind his dear cat, Buddy and his 2 Huskies Bo and Bear. He was preceded in death by his siblings Eleanor M. Paugh and Kenneth D. Smith. The family will receive friends on Monday, June 4, 2012 from 2-4 and 6-8 PM at Keeney and Basford PA Funeral Home, 106 East Church Street, Frederick. Funeral Services will be held on Tuesday, June 5, 2012 at 11:00 AM in the Etchison Memorial Chapel of the funeral home, Pastor Stacy Brady and Pastor Virginia Price officiating. Interment will be in St. Marks Episcopal Cemetery, Petersville. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Harmony Community Lutheran Church, 3941 Brethren Church Road, Myersville, MD 21773.
