Harold David Harshman

April 21, 1923 — June 3, 2012

Mr. Harold David Harshman, age 89 of Mt. Airy, passed away on Sunday, June 3, 2012 at the Kline Hospice House, Mt. Airy. He was the husband for 66 years of Edythe Brandenburg Harshman who he married on October 27, 1945. Born on April 21, 1923 in New Market he was the son of the late Harry Herbert and Ella Burrier Harshman. Mr. Harshman was a life long member of the Bush Creek Church of the Brethren in Monrovia. He served as the church board chairman, a deacon, former trustee, and sang in the Golden Rule Choir. He also served the church by being on the cemetery board and was a former chairman of the cemetery. His family was the 1983 Frederick County 4-H family of the year, the 1984 Maryland 4-H family of the year and the 2009 Frederick County farm family of the year. In 2009 his family received the 4-H Beef, Sheep and Swine Club Angel Award. He served on the county committee of the USDA Farmers Home Administration. He served on the Board of Directors for Southern States Cooperation, Frederick, MD. He was a 50 year member of the Frederick County Farm Bureau. He was a member of Maryland and Virginia Milk Producers Association and shipped milk for over 50 years. He was the past Sales Chairman of the 4-H Beef, Sheep and Swine Club. He was also a life member of the New Market Volunteer Fire Company and an honorary member of the Linganore FFA Chapter. In addition to his wife he is also survived by his children, H. David Harshman, Jr. and wife Patricia, Ronald Harshman and wife Linda, Gareth Harshman and wife Anna, Charles Harshman and wife Joann, and Melissa A. Burke and husband Terry, all of Mt. Airy, grandchildren, Jeffrey and Leslie Harshman, Christie, Kimberly and Gaylen Harshman, Elizabeth Snyder, Monica Bollinger, Jody and Bryant Harshman, and Sue Hoff, Amy Jo Poffenberger and Gina Harshman, and Megan, Rebecca and Emma Burke and 10 great-grandchildren. Mr. Harshman is additionally survived by sisters G. Lavinia McGolerick and her late husband Jack, and Grace Winpigler and her two late husband's Ralph Brashear and Charles Winpigler, and his sister-in-law Joy Harshman. He is predeceased by his brothers Paul Harshman and Benjamin Yeakle and his sister B. Marie Harris and her late husband John. He is additionally survived by many nieces and nephews. Friends will be received on Friday, June 8, 2012 from 2 to 4 and from 7 to 9 PM at the Keeney & Basford P.A. Funeral Home, 106 E. Church St., Frederick. Additional visitation time will be held from 10 to 11 AM on Saturday, June 9, 2012 at the Bush Creek Church of the Brethren, 4821-A Green Valley Rd., Monrovia, MD 21770 where services will start at 11 AM. Rev. Charles G. Beekley will officiate. The interment will follow at the Pleasant Hill Cemetery (adjacent to the church), Monrovia. Serving as pallbearers will be Grandsons Jeffrey, Gaylen and Bryant Harshman and Great-Grandsons Jared and Dylan Harshman and Alex Snyder. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in Mr. Harshman's name to the Bush Creek Church of the Brethren at the above address or to the Kline Hospice House, PO Box 1799, Frederick, MD 21702.
