Maria Teresa Coffey

November 12, 1932 — June 10, 2012

Maria T. Coffey Maria Teresa Isabella Coffey of Frederick, Maryland died peacefully and surrounded by her children on June 10, 2012 after a long battle against chronic lung disease. Marie, as she was known, was born on November 12, 1932 in the Bronx, New York. She met her husband Kenneth Richard Coffey, Sr. while working at Gibbs and Cox in New York City, and they married on May 8, 1954. Ken, Sr. predeceased her on November 22, 2004. Together they had three children and she is survived by Kenneth Richard Coffey, II and his wife Jan of Walkersville, MD, Robert Michael Coffey and his wife Claudia of Westminster, MD, and Susan Marie Mainhart and her husband Steve of Arnold, MD. Marie had 6 loving grandchildren: Kenneth R. Coffey, III, Karla Rea Coffey, Julia Coffey Smith, Harrison Coffey, Douglas Mainhart and Andrew Mainhart. She also had two great grand children-Damien Coffey and Olivia Smith. Marie, was the youngest of 7 children from parents Olga Vitelli Sordini and Dario Vitelli who immigrated to America from Italy in 1906. She was pre-deceased by parents and her sisters Apollonia, Olga, Daria, and brothers Dario, and Louis. She is survived by her sister Annita Vitelli Dobson who resides in Melbourne, Florida. The family moved from Crugers, New York to Westminster, Md. in 1969. She and her husband Ken retired to New Bern, North Carolina in 1993. She moved from New Bern to Homewood at Crumland Farms in 2008. During her years in New Bern, she was recognized for her work with ceramics many of which are now family heirlooms. She was also an avid fan of music, and worked for a time at Coffey Music in Westminster, MD. Marie also enjoyed watching sports and following politics. Most of all she was an outstanding cook and was known among her family and friends for her expertise in preparing homemade Italian foods. No matter where Marie Coffey went, she made friends very quickly. Such was the case upon her move to New Bern, NC where she still has many close friends. Similarly, she enjoyed her very close friends at Homewood at Crumland Farms including Mary Alice Marks, John Deason, Elizabeth Trout, Nancy Mitchell Dr. Leroy "Reds" Davis, and Eloise Power to name a few who were so helpful and supportive during the last months of her life. Marie loved Homewood at Crumland Farms and forged a special bond with many of the staff at there. She cherished all of her friends especially the nearly life long friendship with Edith Ronner, who was her maid of honor, of Port St. Lucie, FL. In accordance with her wishes, a memorial service will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial contributions be made in her name to the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation, 10626 York Road, Suite A, Cockeysville, MD 21030. Arrangements are with the keeney and Basford Funeral Home, 106 East Church Street, Frederick. Online condolences may be shared at keeneybasford.com
