Ruth Akers

Mrs. Ruth Cronise Akers, 101, of Frederick, died Wednesday, June 27, 2012 at her residence. She was the wife of Edward M. Akers, who preceded her in death on March 14, 1978. They were married on August 16, 1952. Born January 30, 1911, in Mt. Pleasant, she was the daughter of the late Wilbert W. and Bettie K. Cronise. She was a graduate of Frederick High School Class of 1929. She is the last of her immediate family. Surviving are a stepdaughter, Betty Akers Michael and husband Lavier of Mt. Airy, nephew, Wilson Krahnke and wife of Silver Spring, niece, Karla Goodridge and husband Dr. Thomas of Annapolis, cousin, Dr. and Mrs. James R. Grabrill of Camano Island, WA. In addition to her husband and parents, she was preceded in death by sisters, Minnie Belle (Miss Polly) McDevitt and Harriet Elizabeth Harris, and brothers, George Cronise and Willie H. Cronise. She worked as a waitress/cashier at the Francis Scott Key Hotel, while attending school. After graduation, she was employed at the Muse Tailoring Company for a number of years until they closed the factory. She worked for Bennett's department store in Frederick as a clerk and buyer for gifts. Then, worked for the L'Aiglon Factory in Walkersville for 15 years as a manager. She was a seamstress and spent most of her spare time making clothes for many people. Mrs. Akers was a member of Samaritan Rebekah Lodge #51 and the Mt. Pleasant Homemakers Club. She was a member of the United Methodist Church in Mt. Pleasant and the Calvary United Methodist Church in Frederick. She also did volunteer work with the auxiliary for many years with Genesis Elder Care (formerly known as the Meridian Nursing Home), located at 700 Toll House Avenue, Frederick, and coordinated the worship services held there every Sunday morning for many years. Her hobbies were crocheting, knitting and having craft work shops at her home. Her true love was loving her many cats, especially Heidi Precious. She will be greatly missed and remembered by the Rubeck family, who had been involved in her life since 1926; Margaret and Shields Cornpropst of Raleigh, NC, Betty M. Carr of Frederick, Mary Catherine Wells of Forestville, WI, and Helen V. Riggles of Frederick. Blanche Duvall was a loyal and devoted housekeeper and friend for many years for the Akers. Also, Helen Burdette and her husband, Ralph, faithfully served as a wonderful care giver for Ruth during her last few years, as well as a Diane Pelc, a neighbor who constanly checked on her daily to see if she was alright, when she lived in her home on Delaware Road. She will be remembered by her many friends and faithful neighbors through their support and friendship. The funeral service will be held at 11:00 AM, on Tuesday, July 3, 2012, at the Keeney & Basford Funeral, 106 E. Church Street, Frederick. Rev. Harry C. Cole will officiate.
