Harold Dorsey Kehne

Mr. Harold Dorsey Kehne, 86, of Frederick, Maryland, died on Sunday, July 1, at Frederick Memorial Hospital. Harold was the husband of Elizabeth "Boots" Shoemaker Kehne, his wife of 52 years, who predeceased him on June 30, 2003. Born December 8, 1925, in Walkersville, he was the son of Ralph S. and Pauline E. Zimmerman Kehne. He was a member of the Frederick High School Class of 1943. Harold proudly served in the United States Army as a medic during World War II. After his honorable discharge in 1945, he worked on his family's farms, and was then employed at the Monocacy Valley Canning Company. A gifted mechanic, Harold worked as a young man at Emerson andOrme, a Buick dealer in Washington, D.C. Harold brought his talent to Frederick when he owned and operatedKehne's Citgo at 13th and East Streetsin Frederick from 1957 to 1974, where he specialized in foreign car repair. As a Frederick businessman, Harold was a member of the Frederick Junior Chamber, and served as the organization's Vice President. After selling his business, Harold attended the University of Maryland, College Park, receiving his bachelor and master's degrees in education. He then taught at Middletown High School, West Frederick Middle School, and New Market Middle School. Harold retired in 1986. During retirement andalways a farmer, Harold maintained a bountiful garden, the harvests of which were enjoyed by family and friends. Harold was an active member of The Golden Tones, the Frederick County Recreation Council's senior chorus, and a member of the Frederick County Retired Teachers Association and the American Legion Francis Scott Key Post 11. Harold also enjoyed boating and spending time at his home in Rehoboth, Del. Harold is survived by his son, David A. Kehne, and partner, Robert A. Funk, of Frederick; three sisters-in-law, CleoraGaver of Woodsboro, Joann Kehne of Frederick, and Louise Shoemaker of Braddock Heights; six nephews, James Delauter of Woodsboro, Topper Nusbaum and Jeffrey Kehne of Frederick, Timothy Nusbaum of Middletown, Ohio, Jacob A. Shoemaker III of Lovettsville, Va., and Jerome Shoemaker of Braddock Heights; and seven nieces, Margaret Nusbaum and Emy Jo Keller of Frederick, Theresa Shoemaker and Karen Eshinger of Braddock Heights, and Mary Rippeon, Frances Staub and Kathy Molander, all of Myersville. Harold was preceded in death by two daughters, Ann Elizabeth Kehne, who died in 1957, and Laura Jane Kehne, who died in 1967, anda brother, Max S. Kehne, who died in 1973. Harold was Catholic attended St. John the Evangelist Church. He was a member of the Parish Council and, in 1972, he was one of the dedicated parishioners who served as one of the founding members of the Board of Directors at Prospect Hall High School. The family will receive friends from 2 to 4 pm and from 7 to 9 pm Thursday, July 5, at Keeney Basford Funeral Home, 106 E. Church St., Frederick. A Mass will be celebrated at 10 am Friday, July 6, at St. John the Evangelist Church, 118 East Second Street, Frederick, followed by interment at Mt. Olivet Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Harold and Elizabeth Kehne Education Fund at The Community Foundation of Frederick County, 312 East Church Street, Frederick, MD 21701.
