Mrs. Charlotte E. Owen passed away peacefully on August 25, 2012. Born January 21, 1921 in Lititz, Pennsylvania, she was the daughter of Landis E. Herr and Dorothy Lillian Monroe Herr. Charlotte attended Lancaster Business College, where she met her husband of 60 years, Robert D. Owen. After a brief residency in the Washington, D.C. area, the family moved to Braddock Heights, Maryland, where she resided for the last 64 years. Mrs. Owen was active in All Saints Episcopal Church, where she taught Sunday school, served on the Altar Guild and was a member of St. Elizabeth's Study Group. Her volunteer spirit led her to be one of the founders of the Frederick Memorial Hospital Auxiliary; she served there in many areas, her favorite being the emergency room, during a period when the volunteers had a "hands-on" role in comforting patients and assisting the doctors and nurses. In addition to being an avid gardener and accomplished bridge player, after her youngest child went to college, she joined the family business as a typist and bookkeeper. Charlotte will always be remembered as a caring and thoughtful woman and her family and special friends Barbara and Janice will miss her very much. She is predeceased by her husband, Robert D. Owen, eldest daughter Penelope Owen Tarpley and her two brothers, Donald M. Herr and James E. Herr. She is survived by her children Charlotte Owen Casey, Prudence Monroe Owen, Matthew Robert Owen, four grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. A memorial service will be held on Friday, August 31 at 10:30 AM in the Great Hall of All Saints Episcopal Church in Frederick. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that contributions be made to the Salvation Army at PO Box 1003, Frederick, Maryland 21705.
