Bruce E. Schwartz, 81, a longtime resident near Adamstown, MD, died on Sunday, September 9, 2012 at his home from complications of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). He was the son of the late D.A. and Margaret Schrell Schwartz and was born and grew up in Herkimer, NY. He graduated from Herkimer High School, attended Rider College in NJ and then moved with his family to Tucson, AZ where in 1953 he received his BA in Journalism from the University of Arizona. In 1954 he entered the US Army and was stationed in Fort Lewis, WA where he was recognized with an Armed Services award for his many achievements as a public affairs specialist. After his military service, he headed back east to begin a lifelong career in journalism, public relations, advertising,and community service. Mr. Schwartz started as the bureau chief for the Oneonta Daily Star in NY, on to Baltimore, MD, as publications director for the United Appeal, and then to Akron, OH to work in advertising for Malone Associates, Inc. From there, he worked in Corning, NY for 10 years as the director of community affairs for the College Center of the Finger Lakes. In 1975 he and the family moved to the family farm near Adamstown where Mr. Schwartz worked in Washington, DC for nearly 25 years for the US Department of Agriculture as the editor and chief of the Agriculture Research Service. In the late 1970s and 1980s, Mr. Schwartz was part of the Carroll Manor Civic Association as an activist for the betterment of his local community. His first wife of 28 years, Dorothy Renn Schwartz, preceded him in 1987. He married Eileen Bartosic Schwartz in 2001 and is survived by her along with his two daughters Stephanie Schwartz and Anne Schwartz Novak, his four stepchildren Bart Bartosic, Ellen BartosicValli, Thomas Bartosic, and Stephen Bartosic, his two grandsons Ryan and Cameron Novak, his six stepgrandchildren Juliet Valli Romero, John Valli, Elizabeth and Thomas, Jr. Bartosic, and Joey and Tommy Bartosic, stepgreatgrandchild Christian Romero, and several nieces and nephews. A memorial service will be held at the Keeney &Basford Funeral Home, 106 E.
