EDITH D. KLEIN Edith D. Klein "Edie" of Frederick, MD died peacefully on Saturday, September 22, 2012 at Emeritus of Santa Rosa, CA. She was born April 25, 1927, in Framingham, Massachusetts, the only child of the late Henry Harold and Maude G. Dover. She was the widow of Robert E. Klein whom she married in 1947 and who died in 1987. Educated in Winchester, Massachusetts public schools, she graduated from Winchester High School in 1944 where she was a cheerleader, played field hockey and basketball. She was a member of the Boston Swimming Association, racing, and as a member of the rhythmic swimming group. She received a Bachelor of Science in Economics from the University of Massachusetts in 1948. As a teenager she was employed as a lifeguard and a Water Safety Instructor. Later she taught 7th grade briefly in Salem, Virginia. Edie was the bookkeeper for the family business, Treeland Nurseries, Inc. in Frederick, Maryland. Edie's family was a top priority in her life; raising her children, enjoying their visits. She also enjoyed traveling, reading, watching TV, all kinds of needlework, and her cat Felix. Edie showed her sense of humor by calling herself a "professional volunteer." In Girl Scouts, she was a leader at all levels, a member of the boards of Central Maryland Council and Penn Laurel Council, earning the Thanks Badge (highest adult honor) in 1988. She was also a Cub Scout Den Mother and Packmaster, as well as, a member of the National Capital Area Boy Scout Council. She was an active member of the Frederick Memorial Hospital Auxiliary, with over 5,500 hours credit. An active member of the Frederick Women's Civic Club for over 50 years, Edie served in many official capacities, being Treasurer for 14 years, as well as, Club President, District President and President of the Maryland Federation of Women's Club. She was also a member and past President of the GFWC Centennial Club of the Western District. Edie was a board member of the Literacy Council of Frederick County, worked as an office staffer and tutored basic and ESL students. She was also a member and past president of Inner Wheel of Frederick; member of Rose Hill Stroke Support Group and Frederick Area Pi Beta Phi Alumnae Club. A member of the Evangelical Lutheran Church, she was a Sunday School teacher, an office receptionist and member of the Hand Bell Choir. She was also a volunteer at the Frederick County Public Library. For the past six years, Edie has lived at Emeritus of Santa Rosa, where she was well loved by both residents and staff. She served as President of the Resident Council for two years, was a champion Trivia player and an annual winner in the Halloween Costume Contest. While in California, she daringly went hot air ballooning, toured the coastal redwoods, and cruised the San Francisco Bay. Edith is survived by five children; Alexis Shawgo and husband Tami of Santa Rosa, CA, Charles H. Klein of Lubbock, TX, Natalie Jo Boyles and husband Chuck of Frederick, MD, Robert E. Klein, Jr. and wife Diane of Phoenixville, PA, Richard Klein and wife Tina of Salisbury, MD. A son, Peter, died in 1972. She has ten grandchildren; Gregory Shawgo, Breanna Shawgo, Charlisse Wientraub and husband Jonathan of California; Colin Klein and wife Esther, of Illinois, Brandy Klein of Maryland; Captain W. Marc Boyles of Arkansas; Tyler Klein and Paulina Klein of Pennsylvania; Darrin Klein and Jesse Klein of Maryland; 3 step-grandchildren and 2 great granddaughters. She is also fondly remembered by niece Malinda Cecil and family of Salisbury, MD; and foreign exchange students David Reid of Australia and Borge Hatlebrekke of Norway. The family will receive friends from 3 to 5 and 7 to 9 p.m., on Friday, September 28, 2012, at the Keeney and Basford Funeral Home, 106 East Church Street, Frederick, Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m., on Saturday, September 29, 2012, from the Evangelical Lutheran Church, 31 East Church Street, Frederick.
