Mrs. Joan Jeanette Runkles, wife of 49 years to William Harrison Runkles, passed away peacefully with her husband and son by her side on September 28, 2012 at Inova Fairfax Hospital. Born April 2, 1946 she was the daughter of the late Charles and Stella Hammond. She grew up in Frederick, Maryland as one of five children. In addition to her husband, Joan is survived by one son, Randy Runkles and wife Roberta of Rockville, MD; grandchildren Alexander and John Runkles, and Corey and Alisha Baker; two sisters Delores Pearson of Knoxville, MD and Nancy Deavers of Frederick, MD; one brother, Robert "Bobby" Hammond of Supply, NC; brother-in-laws Norman Runkles Jr. of Gaithersburg, MD, Floyd Runkles of Mt. Airy, MD and sister-in-law Ruth Ausherman of Thurmont, MD and their families. In addition to her parents, Joan was preceded in death by one son, Shawn Runkles and one sister Pauline "Polly" Shank. The family will receive friends from 6-8 pm on Friday, October 5 at the Keeney & Basford Funeral Home, 106 E. Church Street, Frederick, MD. Funeral services will be held at 1 pm on Saturday, October 6 at the funeral home. Interment will be held at Locust Grove Cemetery in Mount Airy.
