Mr. Ronald Campbell "Cam" Smith, 66, of Frederick, passed away suddenly on Wednesday, November 21, 2012, at the Frederick Memorial Hospital. He was the beloved and devoted husband of Sally Wampler Smith. Born on November 12, 1946, in West Hartford, Connecticut, he was the son of the late Ronald E. and Loriel Buck Smith. He earned his BA degree from Washington College and his MA degree from American University. Cam played basketball and baseball at Washington College where he also sang in the chorus and was a member of Kappa Alpha Fraternity. As the supervisor of the Frederick County Department of Juvenile Services, he dedicated 40 years to improving the lives of troubled youth and mentoring probation workers who became like members of the family. Cam belonged to the Jaycee's, coached youth baseball and was a fixture on local softball fields for more than 20 years. He also donated his time to a therapeutic horseback riding program. Aside from being the world's greatest Yankees fan, he was the world's most devoted husband, father and grandfather. Cam's hobbies included golfing, traveling with his wife, watching his grandchildren dance, play baseball and football, building a doll house, playing canasta and trivial pursuit with friends and family, traveling to Yankees games with his son, riding the slides at the Atlantis, and painting his granddaughter's toenails. He also loved his dog Jeter. Cam is survived by his wife, Sally, his son, Matthew G. Smith (Heather) of Richmond, Virginia, daughter, Jennifer Smith Jackman (Peter) of Great Falls, Virginia, six grandchildren, Gillian, Owen and Wyatt Smith and Luke, Roman and Gracie Jackman, sisters Suanne Knight and husband Donald and Dorothy McInnis and husband Jack, all of Florida, and one niece and nine nephews. The family will receive friends from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m., on Tuesday, November 27, 2012, at the Keeney and Basford Funeral Home, 106 East Church Street, Frederick. Funeral Mass will be held at 11:00 a.m., on Wednesday, November 28, 2012, at Saint John the Evangelist Roman Catholic Church, 118 East Second Street, Frederick. Rev. Kevin Farmer, will be the celebrant. Interment will be private.
