Mr. Wilbur Lee "Will" Main, 77, of Frederick, died on Saturday, December 22, 2012, and entered eternal life with his Lord and Savior. Native of Frederick, he was born on January 23, 1935, the youngest of three sons to the late J. Frank and Evelyn Verena Ridenour Main. He was honored to serve his country as a United States Marine. Will is remembered by those who knew and loved him as a man of integrity, rare talent and accomplishment. As a youth, he made local headlines when he became champion of the National Soapbox Derby in Akron, Ohio. His self-built racer was emblazoned along its side with "Main's Market," in reference to his grandparent's grocery store, formerly located on East Third Street in Frederick. He was a graduate of Frederick High School and a member of the 1952 undefeated Cadet Football team which earned a state record that year. He continued his football career as co-captain of the University of Maryland Terrapin football team. After graduation, he was contracted to participate in The Chicago Bears Football Club's 1959 Season Training Camp. At the University of Maryland, he earned his degree in Physical Education and shared his lifelong love of athletics with countless students of all ages. His many roles included high school football coach, swimming, archery, and tennis instructor and as the Physical Director of the YMCA in Frederick. Will enjoyed spending time with family, and had a passion for running, sailing his Catamaran, riding his motorcycle, oil painting, building and flying RC airplanes, and also restoring historic homes, especially two of his own in Frederick's historic district. Will is survived by his devoted daughters, Kathy Lynn Walter and husband Robert, of Walkersville and Melanie Jean Devin and husband Douglas, of Hagerstown, grandchildren, Heather Lynn Walter, and Emily Ann Walter Atwell and husband Phil, of Frederick, and Dane Michael Devin and Troy Douglas Devin, of Hagerstown, one great granddaughter, Olivia Anne Atwell, one niece, Verena Main Rose and three nephews, James Main, Jeff Main and Jay Main. He was preceded in death by two brothers, Frank Main and James "Jim" Main. Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m., on Thursday, December 27, 2012, at the Key Memorial Chapel in the Mount Olivet Cemetery, 515 South Market Street, Frederick. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service. The Rev. Harry C. Cole, of Calvary United Methodist Church, will officiate. Interment will follow the service.
