Mr. Michael James Herbst, 58, of Frederick, died unexpectedly at home on March 7, 2013. Born on June 27, 1954, he was the son of Ralph Herbst and Irma Bates Herbst. Michael was a graduate of Thomas Johnson High School. He was a waiter and worked at The City Club and was a manager of the Turning Point Inn, before he started his long time career at Mealey's Restaurant. While at Mealey's he was voted by Frederick Magazine readers as "Waiter of the Year" for 9 years in a row. Mr. Herbst was forced to leave Mealey's because of a rare health condition, ADEMS disease, which the Frederick News Post reported on, interviewing Michael and describing his recovery and rehabilitation. Michael was able to work again and he began working at Costco. Michael was a wonderful "people person" and those in his life were special to him. He always remembered the details in many peoples' lives and would often send greeting cards and special things to those he considered special to him. He was a member of Frederick Church of the Brethren and still received cards from his Sunday School teacher, Elizabeth Wastler. Mr. Herbst is survived by his sister, Wanda Seitler, half-brother Larry Herbst and his wife Teresa of West Virginia. He will also be remembered by all the special friends, co-workers and acquaintances in his life including very special friends Rhonda Stockman and husband Linwood, January Gray and husband Josh and Natalie Gray. Most importantly, he will be missed by his god-son Wyatt Gray with whom Michael was very close. He also leaves behind his beloved Chihuahua, Millie. He will be remembered by aunts and uncles Anna Mae Bates from WV, Goldie from VA, Phyllis from NC, Shirley, Ed and Marie from Jefferson and Bill from WV. Michael also leaves behind his good friend Vlady and Chris and Gerald and Ethel and Ellie. Additionally, he will be missed by his dear lunch pals Mo and Joyce, Toni from Costco as well as her grandson Charlie, whom he loved and so many other friends too many to list. He was preceded in death by Thomas, Bobby, Tootles, Junior and Peggy. Funeral Services will be held on Saturday, March 16 at 10:00 AM at Frederick Church of the Brethren, 201 Fairview Avenue, Frederick, Maryland 21701. Inurnment will be private at a later date.
