Claude J. Hartman Sr.

October 30, 1916 — March 18, 2013

Mr. Claude J. Hartman, Sr., of Frederick, died Monday, March 18, 2013, at Edenton Retirement Community, Frederick. Born on October 30, 1916, he was the son of Edward Hartman and Mattie Ayers. He was the husband of the late Barbara June Loy, who died in 2000. Mr. Hartman was the last of 16 children. Claude was a boilermaker and retired from Montgomery County Schools in the early 1980's. He had a lifelong love of baseball, having played in his youth, and received an invitation to try out for the St. Louis Cardinals and Branch Rickey, but declined, electing to stay closer to his wife. Claude managed many local baseball teams including Furnace Mountain, Gapland and the Point Of Rocks teams. He enjoyed bird hunting and rabbit hunting with his beagles. Later in life, he tended to his flower garden and vegetable garden. Claude was a charter member of the Point of Rocks Ruritan Club and was an honorary life member at Carroll Manor Fire Company. Mr. Hartman is survived by his sons, Ronald Hartman and Claude Hartman Jr., grandchildren William Johnson Hartman and wife Julie of Altoona, PA and Dawn Hartman and husband Bill of Salisbury as well as great-grand- daughter Barbara June Hartman. The family will receive friends from 2-4 and 6-8pm, on Thursday, March 21, at Keeney & Basford Funeral Home, 106 E. Church Street, Frederick, MD 21701. Funeral Services will be held at 10:00 am, on Friday, March 22, 2013, in the Etchison Memorial Chapel of the funeral home. Pastor Edward Hartman and Pastor Paul Papp will officiate.
