Mr. John E. Nutter, 83, of Frederick, passed away on April 18, 2013 at Homewood at Crumland Farms Health Care Center, following an extended illness. He was the husband of nearly 60 years to Lou A. Nutter. Born in Pennsburg, West Virginia on January 15, 1930, he was the son of the late John L. and Gladys (Jack) Nutter. John graduated from Bridgeport High School in 1947. He received a B.S. Degree in Medical Technology at Alderson-Broaddus College, Philippi, West Virginia in 1951. In June 1951, John went into the U.S. Army to serve his required two years of service. He worked in the Army Hospital Lab as a Medical Technologist in California. On July 4, 1953, he married Lou Agnes Pressau. He recieved his Master's Degree in Bacteriology in 1955 from the University of West Virginia. John started work on his PhD at the University of Virginia in 1955, and in 1958 he began working at Fort Detrick. In 1963, he started working again towards his PhD degree through a government program for advance degrees. While working full time and studying for his degree, John received his PhD from the University of Virginia, June 1965. His dissertation is titled "Studies on the Mechanism of Immunity to Pasteruella Tulerensis". John's study is credited with proving the usefulness of an in vitro system as an indicator of both the virulence of the micro-organism and the immunity of the host. John left Fort Detrick and started working at the National Institutes of Health around 1972. While at NIH, John worked on grants for DNA and AIDS research. He enjoyed his years there and retired in 1987. John continued to work as a consultant for research grants until full retirement in 2006. Dr. Nutter was a faithful member of All Saints Episcopal Church where he served as senior warden, played in the first hand bell choir and served on the search committee for the Rector. In addition to his wife, he leaves a loving family of two daughters, JoEllen Nutter of New Mexico, Lee Ann Franklin and her husband Shawn of Bel Air, six grandchildren, Lt. Jacob King, his wife Amanda and their son Harrison, Mrs. Jana Roberts, her husband Jonathan and their son Pace, Mr. Jared King, his wife Wendy and their daughter Julia, Mrs. Janelle Ausherman, her husband Donnie and their son Anthony, Mr. Garrett Franklin and his wife Hillary and their daughter Charlotte and Ms. Nicole Franklin. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, April 27 at 2:00 PM at All Saints Episcopal Church, 106 West Church Street, Frederick. Inurnment will be in the All Saints' Columbarium in the Memorial Garden.
