Mrs. Doris Elaine Simmons Gilbert, 88, of Frederick, MD, passed away on July 9, 2013, at Frederick Memorial Hospital. Mrs. Gilbert was born in Frederick on November 23, 1924. She was the daughter of the late Chester J. and Ruth C. Sheffield Simmons of Frederick. She was a 1941 graduate of Frederick High School and a graduate of the Frederick Visitation Academy with a secretarial degree. She was also a member of St. John's Catholic Church in Frederick. Before retirement, Mrs. Gilbert served as administrative assistant to the Dean of Academic Affairs at Hood College for 24 years. After retirement, she volunteered at the Frederick Memorial Hospital for 5, 500 hours in different areas. She also volunteered as a first grade teacher of CCD at St. John's Catholic Church in her earlier years. Mrs. Gilbert also worked at Homewood at Crumland Farms as a receptionist after her retirement. Mrs. Gilbert was the last of her immediate family and was predeceased by two brothers, James N. Simmons and R. Arnold Simmons. She is survived by two daughters, Lynda Hines and husband Ralph of Stephens City, VA, and Karen White and husband Robert of Frederick, MD. She is also survived by six grandchildren, Tony Brust and wife Cathy of Walkersville, MD, Justin Brust and wife Sherry of Leesburg, VA, John White and wife Meredith of Chantilly, VA, Megan Hines of Stephens City, VA, Erin Stitcher and husband Ryan of Stephens City, VA, and Kelly Hines of Stephens City, VA. She also has seven great grandchildren, Tyler S. and Jaxson W. Brust of Walkersville, MD, Sophia M. and Gabriel D. Stitcher of Stephens City, VA, Ethan G. and Austin C. Brust of Leesburg, VA, and Peyton N. White of Chantilly, VA. Mrs. Gilbert was the matriarch of the family and will be missed by the entire family who loved her. Friends will be received at the Keeney and Basford Funeral Home, 106 E. Church St., Frederick on Monday, July 15, 2013 from 12 Noon until the conclusion of a Rosary Service that starts at 1 PM. At that time, all are invited to join the family in procession to Saint John the Evangelist Roman Catholic Church, 118 E. 2nd St., Frederick for a Mass of Christian Burial, scheduled to begin at 2 PM. Father Kevin Farmer will officiate. The interment will follow at Mt. Olivet Cemetery, Frederick. Serving as pallbearers will be Ralph Hines, Robert White, Tony Brust, Justin Brust, John White, and Ryan Stitcher.
